AMMENDED Gateshead High St

This is a familiar view if you ever got the Bus to Newcastle's Worswick St.
Even though the photo is from pre late 30s early 40s it still looked the same looking out of the window from the big red Northern General buses in the later years.

Great photo Norman, Gateshead High Street looked the same for many years then it went into decline, when I was up in the North East last week we drove down a street, can’t remember the name but crossed then over the High Street towards the by-pass, when aproaching the roundabout, prior to joining the by-pass, there are shops either side of the road the6 really should be demolished they look awful, pity Gateshead High Street can’t regain some of its glory.

The flyover was built to take the traffic off the High Street making a pedestrian shoppers paradise. Unfortuntely the shoppers stayed in their cars and followed wherever the road went to. The Metro Centre was the final nail in its coffin. Now, that is also beginning to wilt. Some towns have overcome modern internet shopping difficulties and continue to seemingly thrive. Morpeth, Gosforth and Whitley Bay come to mind. Gateshead has few modern redeeming features - except the road leading out. Even that is bunged up for the next 3 to 4 years at the Tyne Bridge. Poor planning or is it perhaps a ploy to trap and entice shoppers back onto the High Street. Meandering about like lost souls looking for a decent store or pub. Where once both were notably plentiful, they are now a rarity. Hopefully something good comes from the Pipewellgate area when /if ever the excavations are completed. You can always go and have yet another look at the Milleniumm Bridge. Unfortunatelay, it no longer tilts just because it can. It will only do so if you have suitable boat and wish to pass under it. Swing bridge is also knackered. Just no fun near Gateshead. Football team OK but the council decided not to give support when requred. In spite of the above problems and although I don't live there, Gateshead is my birthplace - and I love it.

The Metro Centre

I visited the Metro Centre a few weeks ago OR tried to.

I wanted the Evans Cycle shop which was just to the West of the Main building but I thought that it was moving into the Metro Centre itself as when in the Metro Centre some time back they seemed to be moving to one end on the upper floor.

The move looks like it never came off, so visited the old shop which was a waste of time.

I wanted a pair of cycling shoes but almost no selection and what I may have bought none in my size.

The shop had plenty bike for sale but little else.

I then looked on line and I probably will have to go into Leeds and if that no good go over Manchester way.

When I was in the Evan shop I asked how to get over to Byker ( there is a Good cycle shop there) but they couldn’t give me a route to follow avoiding the emissions zone.

So didn’t bother just bought a pair of flat peddles and used my old trainers.

I hear from friends that the Metro Centre is in their words going down the Nick!

However that seems to be all shopping areas including Harrogate.

Next week we will go to York as not been for a while !

I thought that there was an optical illusion with the Truck between the tram and the car.

It looks like the truck is carrying let’s say very tall windows. They must be light as the truck doesn’t seem to be leaning.

Norman can you have a close look to see if the truck is carrying those “ windows”

My copy is no better Allan and Ive always assumed the Windows were being taken somewhere in the back of that vehicle.

Window transport

Almost certainly Windows being carried by one of Elders Walker small trucks. The company still exists having taken over the nearby old Palace Cinema, This would have been a hundred or so yards away from the Scala.

Emission Zone

Unlike the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London, Newcastle's clean air zone does not affect private cars and motorcycles. Instead, the Newcastle CAZ targets taxis, vans, lorries and buses that don't meet certain emissions standards. Failing that, just use your bike and peddle to Byker. After all, the clue is in the name. BYKER

Couldn’t cycle as in the car and no shoes to ride the bike hence the visit.

I understand that if you cross the Tyne bridge it costs you a tenner to get to Newcastle. True or false?

Emmisions and the route to Byker

Newcastle's clean air zone does not affect private cars and motorcycles. There are no charges to enter the city. However, why would you want to enter the city if you are going to Byker. Cross the Tyne Bridge but don't turn left into the City. Keep going and take the first Right towards Heaton, Sheilds Road & Byker. Huge Bike shop at top of the main shopping area. er .. (Shopping centre bit like Gateshead High Street) If you go by bike, don't leave it outside the shop or you may not need your new cycle shoes when you come out. You may have to throw them away and get the bus home, or go back and buy a new bike and start again.

I’ve no need to go into Newcastle this year, maybe next year.

In any case I park at a Metro and use that to go in.

I use the Metro Centre or Heworth.

It’s an 85 mile trip to get to Newcastle and usually stay at friends who transport me to where ever.

York is 22 miles away and Leeds 16 but go to York yes Leeds only if have too.

Strange way to load the window frames in a vertical position, instead of horizontal? He'd be fined doing that now in such a small truck.

John,the Uk has never had a legal height limit for loads being transported on the highway, although they do have an advisable height of 16 feet 3 inches which allows for several bridge types, but this is not enforceable.

To John, Glass is always transported vertically, even now. On the sides of vans.

Imagine picking up a large pane of glass, horizontally? Gravity would overcome, as it as it's weakest....

However, we are looking at FRAMES, not glass, MY error.
Seems sense to be vertical, you wouldn't knock over as many pedestrians that way!!!
