Newcastle in the early 1900s.

A view from over 100 years ago.That's the George Stephenson monument on the Neville St-Westgate Rd junction.

Norman do you have any idea what the building is with the tower is? I am presuming it's on Grainger street, Could it be part of the County Hotel as it opened in 1874.

I dont know Brian so checked on Google Earth and could it be the County Hotel with its original dome?

It could well be, the original looked bigger but the current looks more in keeping with the building.

That building is long gone. The whole block rebuilt. What it original was ?

Note the name of the insurance Co very long winded.

It’s the Douglas Hotel. As Allan said, that whole block was demolished several years ago. It also housed the Long Bar which featured in Get Carter.

Yes that’s very like it BUT.

If you compare the two photos there are differences.

The hotel looks like it has two “ Spire roofs but the photo in header has a different Spire very similar but different maybe same architect.

Maybe there was a third Spire ODD.

Look carefully at the snippet from the main picture.
You will see 3 of 4 pillars forming a wall at the base od the Tudor style gable end building. On this wall was an inscription stating this was the entrance to the old Grammar School. Perhaps the tower was part of the school.

I was trying to work out the angle leading up to the cathedral an̈d thought the Douglas was not on that line but it's hard to get the angles right because you only know the modern nowadays. I know the large hotels had their own laundry's and was wondering if it was a vent tower for hotels laundry.

Remember going to Gosforth Park races with mam and dad must be 65 years ago got a bus back to central station to get train back to Hebburn .Dad took us opposite central station on the left that must have been burger bar another memory .

Norman it was indeed a Wimpy's franchise ran by Bowers who has the fish and chip restaurant between Grainger Street and Nun Street

I think the building footprint changed slightly when Gunner House, Henry's gents hairdressers and Bowers was built, so it's actually putting me off .

Here is the inscription stone stating the Royal Grammar School occupied the area which probably included Brian's spurious tower. The inscription is situated at the foot of the right corner pillar. Unfortunately I cannot read all the words. Perhaps someone else can.
