Rig in River

A rig has been placed on bend of River - what could they be drilling for?

Ian the rig is a shallow water type often used to test gas deposits or oceanographic data collection such as current flow. It looks like the gas board rig.

I don't believe that statement what so ever, there's more to it than what's been told I bet," Plans for a multi-million-pound project on the Tyne that will store historic mining contamination and safeguard jobs and industry (are to be revealed). What jobs, what Industry, where will the landfill be located for Millions & millions of tons of stinking river silt. For me it's to spend more money on worthless projects instead of doing something worth while like roads and estate maintenance. I would love to at that meeting. That small jack-up rig is not used for drilling at sea or river beds but very expensive to hire.

not for deep sea Stan, no, but it Floats and have worked on similar jackups in and around the African Deltas for years.

If the river had been dredged the way it had in the past to allow ships so sail up to Newcastle it would not be needed now.

When the Environment Agency decided to stop dredging and sell off all the dredgers, it caused flooding everywhere for most people living near rivers.

They are sampling for approx. 3 weeks.

Dredging the Tyne

I understand that that stopped some time ago.

Goodness knows the state of the river due to that!

We have a beck which is about 1-2 yards wide and after heavy rain it rises about 2 feet.

Thank goodness the side has a lot of rock in it so not a lot of erosion, but the silt that can be seen at times a lot.

The beck drains an area of about 4 square miles by the time it gets to us, It may drain more land but there are underground springs about.

Taking the vast area the Tyne drains there must be a huge amount is silt entering the river.

Old maps seem to indicate that the river used to have a lot of sand banks, some at Hebburn.

Sounds like a decision come back to bite them in the BUT.

Allan you have to wonder if the silt will bank up as it originally did because dredging will have changed the flow of some of the currents. I know that at low tide people have walked across the river near Blaydon Bridge in recent times. So will we see the reappearance of some of the islands and banks the dotted the river and some were of considerable size.

I would suspect it would but not the same as the many changes to the river banks and new drainage from the land into the river over time.

Trouble is there is very few companies that require river traffic these days so who pays!

It could lead to flooding as not enough river flow or capacity to take overflow away.
