'Down Shields' early 1900s

I was born in 1944 and always appreciated I was born in easier times than our previous generations.
We had a radio when I was a little lad in the 1940s, unlike the South Shields people on this photo.

Wow the daughter seems to be incredibly tall for that era, how things were in those days, the daughter looks quite well dressed though.

Height in the early 1900’s.

The photo could be quite deceiving as the door height may be low and the young lady yes tall and slim.

My Grandfather was b 1886 and 6’ 6” similar to his father. His youngest brother 6’ 3” ish, sister 5’9” and smallest brother 5’6” as far as I can determine.

In those days people did tend to be shorter BUT a lot of Scots Army regiments there was a height requirement which was high but cannot find the info.

I think that these days the minimum height is 5’ 3” or thereabouts.

Back in the early 1900’s a lot would depend on food quality and amount as well as who your parents were.

STRANGE ? Don't remember seing any remnents of stone cottages with thatch or sod roofs near Shields ? Even the dress of the two ladies looks strange for the coastal village or town of South Shields. ?

I think that they are wearing aprons to protect their skirts.

I have never seen any cottages like that. Anything with a thatched roof very rare theses days.

The closest one to us is at the bottom of Bottle Bank on Knaresborough Waterside. Saw that being reforged about 5 years ago.

We had a radio and I had to keep taking the battery to a shop on Station Road to get charged, Inalso had my own ‘Crystal Set’!

I remember two brothers owned the shop. The younger used to ride a cycle with a large box on the front.
