Bill Quay Pubs

Hi Norman and everyone, hope you are all well, getting used of all these rubbish weather alert scares, my health is slowly getting back to some semblance of normality, seems once the NHS have you they don't seem to want you let you go, quick question for all our detectives, Bill Quay is a very small area with lots of history , my question is how many pubs did it have, this will or should include Pelaw Main and the long lost Jonadab Hamlet, hope this keeps you all busy, whilst hearing our scary weather reports,

There were a few, these are some names that I remember being told about:
The Wardley
The Albion
The Quay Tavern, also used to be known as The Cromwell, I believe that was in the 1980’s but this pub has mostly been known as The Cricketers.
The Bricklayers Arms, this was in the area known as Jonadab.
Burton House, also in the Jonadab this was early 1900’s.

I am sure there are probably more, maybe Mac C or Allan Campbell can think of others?

Good to see you back on the board Ken.
Without looking through files etc I can name 2 in Pelaw Main Staiths area.
The Staith House at the Bill Quay end of the staiths & at the other end was the Ellison Arms nicknamed the Sailors Arms where girls met sailors.
I was told the manager of the Staith House frowned on that kind of thing

so didnt allow it on his patch

Sorry Liz. I never lived in Bill Quay other than for about 8 months in 1965 when parents moved there and I moved back to Hebburn in 1965 after getting married.

We moved to Knaresborough in 1969 and visited my parents in Bill Quay as often as possible until they died in 1984.

I was in the Cricketers a few times but that’s about it.

I rarely visited pubs or clubs anyway, no time or inclination.

I know about the two pubs on the riverside near the coaling Staiths and possibly walked past then as a youngster but that’s it.

Working at Marconi 1961 - 1966 I used the Cricketers which was managed by an old lady called Ethel. A great pint of scotch! and the smell of a real olde worlde pub!

Stan, Ethel ran the Cricketers for years, she sold pie and peas on Fridays, you had to take your own containers.

Liz I preferred it to the Albion as Ethel gave it an atmosphere!

As a child I remember the Albion very well as I used to visit the office licence more or less every day, I am sure the landlady was called Olga, I could be wrong. You may wonder why I visited as a child, reason was my late mum ran the canteen at Harrison’s Shipyard for quite a few years, before I started school mum used to take me with her if childcare wasn’t available, happy days.

Stan, I worked at Marconi's in 1964 when they were altering the Machine shop, moving lathes, drills etc.to improve the flow of work.
I had to sign the Official Secrets Act, but their secrets were safe with me, I hadn't a clue what they were making.
I worked maintenance with Reg Bastable, who was also ETU shop steward.

A lady lived next door to my mother worked in the canteen, she asked the manager why they bought so much Macaroni when it was never on the menu.
The manager explained that it wasn't Macaroni but Marconi on the boxes.

I recall Reg very well along with Harry Brown, millwright and the big move! As for what we made , - it was mainly mobile radar and as you probably know it was all close hand precision fitting to M.O.D standards. They were all craftsmen in there and I learned my fitting skills through them. Billy Bray died a few years back and just before Ian Robson and I tried to find him to thank him for what he taught us. Without Marconi. I would never have advanced my career. I went back a few years ago to see the dereliction. I left with a lump in my throat...

Ian Robson and I started there at Easter 1961 as post lads before serving our time. Ian now lives in Brazil and we still keep in touch 2/3 times per week! 63yrs sharing music and friends.

Ian and his late wife Jean were our neighbours for about twelve years, we shared the drive between our houses.
