Another old cabinet photo

Another old cabinet photo. Photographer was Carling & Horlington, King Street, South Shields.

Peter. It would be of advantage if you knew when that photographer was in business as that give a partial date of the photo.

I’ve done that with a lot of my Scottish photos.

Another great photo.

The thing that we don’t know is how much it cost t have it taken.

I doubt that it would be that expensive as there were was a lot of competition.

I have a feeling that these photos taken in a studio were common but it as rare to have photos taken at a wedding , cost no doubt.

From the ones that I have, photos of children, engagement or betrothal or after the wedding all taken in a studio.

In later years say 20’s to 40’s you had the seaside photo ? Booths? Type thing then the man with the camera on the Prom.

Here are photographers in Shields 1897-98.

Then in 1914, Robert Hamilton Carling was a photographer at 38 King street & no sign of Mr Horlington.

Finding information out on these photographers is nigh on impossible.

Looking on the census returns might bring up something.

Probably is in England, it’s a bit better in Scotland as lists have been published and I have a few but areas missing.

Of course the Various Census documents sometimes give a clue. I have done that once or twice.

William Harry Horlington was a Photographer and Artist 1866-1944
There’s a Cabinet Photo that comes up belonging to the National Portrait Gallery if you search Google. It was Margaret who gave me the idea to look.
I can find him as a Photographer in South Shields 1891 Census and 1901 and possibly Harrogate 1909 in Electoral Rolls ( no profession given there )

In the 1910 Hebburn Rates List, Henry Langlands is listed at 51 Carr St.
There was only 1 Platt in Hebburn then & it was a F Platt who owned 2 properties in Swindon St 1910.

By 1921 he was down as a Temporary Postman, Hebburn but out of work like so many on that census and he died in 1933. He also served in the war. The war and the depression probably a factor. His father was a photographer in Scotland

I don’t know where that is or was. Will have to have a look, I suspect it’s off Parliament Street.
