Wapping Street and Ferry Landing

Wapping Street from the river showing the Direct Ferry Landing and Kirton's Quay. To the right can be seen the pile driver for Brigham and Cowan's Dock. The ferry was for foot passengers only and ran at five minute intervals between the New Quay, North Shields and Kirton's Quay, South Shields, the fare was a halfpenny, hence the popular name "Ha'penny Ferry". The photo dates from 1910 and the photographer was W Willits.
