Voting reminder.

Yesterday I received the urgent reminder for voting in 2026 and after through the post. Can anyone tell me what the hell your National Insurance Number has to do with voting, and also why the voting form has to be signed by the person wishing to vote. I think all the time I voted at the polling booth I didn’t have to sign any paper.

Thomas, I think it’s because anyone can have a postal vote now and there has been a lot of fraud especially with postal votes.

I think you could be right Sheila as don’t forget if you vote at a Polling Station you must produce ID before you are given your voting paper.

Can you check the source of the reminder Thomas.
It could well be a scam to get both your NI numbers and your signature.
But I read on the Electoral Commission site
"If you have a long-term postal vote that you applied for before 31 October 2023, this will now expire on 31 January 2026. The electoral services team at your local council will contact you before your postal vote expires".
But because 31/1/2026 is a long way away can you copy the "form" and paste it here so we can know if you are dealing with something kosher?

Maybe a call to the council to verify this is genuine, seems quite sometime into the future to register for Vote.

Thanks Thomas. It certainly looks genuine but to be really satisfied why not drop an email to the elections@ address at the top of the form just asking them to confirm that they have sent out renewal notices even though 2026 is a year away!

Yes it does BUT I note that your postcode is not given correctly. It should be all large case.

Admin should delete the post of the letter immediately and maybe repost blanking the address off.
Posting your address is an open invitation to scammers.

Yes Norman it’s the same form, but my main point was why do they want your NI Number. I have noticed on the back of the envelope it does have the return address BELLSHILL ML4 3wu which is in Scotland.

Thomas apparently the requirement for an NI No in order to be able to vote by post came into force in October 2023, the details are then checked against the information held by the Department for Work and Pensions, it is supposed to stop fraud.

It stops people using deceased voters vote amongst other things

NI Number and signature are all part of security process. I have no problem providing them for my own postal vote.

I doubt very much that many will vote for the Labour Party but there will always be the ‘faithful’, I don’t think that the Tories will have been forgiven even in 4 years time, so personally I think Reform will pick up quite a number if votes probably not enough to form a Government so might have to do some deal with the Tories, that is what I think.

I have not voted Labour for about the last 10-15 years and voted last year for Reform.

Our Jarrow MP Kate Osborne (a Southerner so no 'Geordie' heritage) & the South Shields MP Emma Lewell Buck BOTH cowardly abstained when the Winter Fuel help for Pensioners was inline to be scrapped.
As we know It was scrapped and those two said nothing.
They do this job simply because it gives them a great standard of living and better still they both get great expenses.
But they will still get voted in next time cos they are Labour MPs.

Herefordshire is split into 2 constituencies, until the last election both of these constituencies were held by the Conservatives, at the last election the MP for the constituency that I live in got very complacent, on the other hand the Green Party were everywhere, what happened the Green Person was voted into Parliament, don’t know if she will get voted in again as she seems to have disappeared of the face of the earth.
