Sink hole in Surrey

It’s growing larger and it’s been said that that area is an old sand pit. Probably backfilled or whatever.
So did someone not check the ground before giving planning or starting building.
There is mention of tunnels as well. True or false there should be people taken to court, difficult I know.
In some areas you would have to go back 100s of years to check.
Around us no mine workings that we know of but about 1/2 Mile from us there is a 15 foot dia, vent shaft, with 10 foot high brickwork.
As far as I can discover there is a “ tunnel” for 24” water pipes hence the vent.
One of these days I must go into the library and see what the old maps show as they could pass under our house or near it.
Correction our house ( an old barn)is about 200:years old according to an 1848 map
Under Hebburn there are mine workings but down deep, those down as far 1000:feet I gather. I have seen maps of the workings but none with the modern buildings shown.
That reminds me, somewhere I have a map showing all those big pipes which were from a wall poster in a hut on a campsite that we visited 15 years ago. The site owner had something to do with waterworks and had worked for the same company as me but some years earlier.
There is a possible water problem for us in that there are a lot of springs around ( Harrogate is a Spa town.) there are 4 running into our beck, one quite big.
A local looked for older maps from the are and found maps readily available online. Some maps showed underground workings in the area. Sound like greedy builders not doing what should have been done but also negligent local authority officers.
