Millennium Bridge

Norman's photo of the Millennium Bridge got me looking for these photos showing the bridge being taken from AMEC, Howden to Newcastle by the Asian Hercules II on the 20th November 2000.

Good photos - I wonder who took them.
Later around mid day the bridge was being lowered into place - taken from the Tyne Bridge.

I should have said in my post that the photos were taken by Kevin Blair who has given me his permission to use all his photos. I like your set of photos.

I wonder what was the cost of the crane enormous I would think.

How do they move that crane ? Is it reasembled on site ? Who owns it ? Lot of questions but I'm curious and no nothing about it.

We have two photos of that crane one without the upper section and one with an upper section.

Depending on the design it would probably not be an easy or cheap job to rig or de rig it.

Watched cranes being rigged years ago, fascinating to watch but the cranes of today are way way more technical.

The mobile cranes about today are in some cases BIG lifters seen one that can lift 500 tons. I think that that one can trundle down the road and finally assembled on site.

I think that there are even bigger ones way over 500 tons.

All a long way from the Iron Fairy of way back.

Heavy lift cranes

The biggest one is in China and can lift 4,000 tons I understand.

You have to be careful as it would probably only be able to lift that very close to the crane.

As the booms extends in reach or height the lifting capacity drops say 230 tons at 170 metres height. If the reach is bigger load reduced.

The biggest lift by a crane is about 20,000 tons but that was a shipyard crane not seen a photo of that.

Why am I interested in Cranes. Purely because I worked in Palmers and they lifted stuff. Out on sites over the years the increase in capacity over the years massive changes.

However anything engineering interests me be it in wood, iron, steel, plastic or composite etc.

To see what the experts think about very early works like Egypt and Rome or earlier is interesting.

Electric stuff now leaves me way behind. Could do household and car electrics. Up to a point but once into the computer side of car stuff just gone.

These day cars can have over 20 control units built in. A BMW replacement headlight unit being installed by a dealer has to connect with the factory in Germany before it will work.

On U tube a Rolls Royce damage by flooding was being repaired. The amount of “ control units” in the car Wow.
