Range extenders for home WiFi

Because of the construction of our house, an old barn, we have thick walls and insulated well.

The WiFi range therefore limited.

I’m thinking of using range extenders that use the household electric sockets. Anyone used them?

Hello Allan, like you we live in a converted barn with thick walls and heavily beamed ceilings, we couldn’t receive Wi-Fi in our sitting room, we have used TP link which we bought from Curry’s, we have used the existing set for about 6 years, the only issue we find is that they need to be re- paired (not repaired), I can’t tell you how much we paid for them as to long ago, maybe there are other things available but if the need arose again we would buy TP Link.

I used extenders in my last home very successfully.
But now I use BT supplied wi-fi discs and they are perfect. If you are with BT I they do up two free.
Try them first and see if it works for you. You could save the expense of the TP Links.
Other providers may have similar systems

Apparently you can get these discs free if your Contract with BT states it is Complete Wi-Fi if not you need to pay for them either through BT,Amazon also sell them.

Allan if you decide to go down the BT discs route I would be very interested to know how you get on.

Been with Sky for broaadband and TV. A bit limited out in the sticks but never bothered looking at others.

Sky is getting expensive so maybe a change due.

Living in the sticks means we were more or less compelled to go with BT, we do not have fibre broadband, the speeds are very slow, as previously mentioned we have had quite a few issues, if it rained and water git into the BT box then e everything crashed we had to wait fir the box yo dry out, then we had another problem when a bullet, we have shoots where we live, hit the wire that resulted in no service for awhile, I could go on but I will stop now.

Virgin have an app that monitors the strength of signal in each room, they sent us a satellite mini server free of charge. It's excellent.

Under normal circumstances the usual gadgets would work fine but thick walks and beams everywhere it is difficult, for example I can’t get a mobile signal in certain parts of our barn, very annoying I can tell you.

Just this month changed from TalkTalk to Vodafone with a New WiFi router and Hub which displaces the land line before 2025 change over getting 60Mbps and much cheaper by far. Good luck Allan.

Wi-Fi and the problems' firstly there are three (3) bandwidths, 2.4Ghz and 5.Ghz, and indeed now 6Ghz the 2.4Ghz has a longer range but slower and it is is more prone to interference from other devices as smart home appliances, baby monitor's, security camera's Bluetooth ,garage doors devices, so it takes a long time to deliver the service, so get lots of interference, the 5Ghz will work better, but only in very confined area's and closer to the Hub or Router, better for gaming and video conferencing ,so help with less interferance, the 6Ghz is the latest generation of the Wi-Fi standard but only 6E BUILDS ON Wi-Fi 6 can operate, which translates to new devices like the Apple iPad, and Galaxy s10 and a few others mobiles, so it is a bit complicated, basically 2.4Ghz goes through walls and 5Ghz stays inside walls, whilst the 6Ghz is only for very New Devices, for WIFI extenders the best I have used and still think they are very good, sir the TP-LINK MESH extenders easy to install and very clever and powerful, look at the link or watch the YouTube, hope this helps, try the TP-LINK MESH, you can add as many devices to suite your needs, click the link
