Durham Court

The residents of Durham Court have today received a letter from the council telling them that Durham Court is coming down and they'll have to move. They're being offered money and the more money they will receive depends on how quick they leave. There's a meeting in the hub tonight at 5 o'clock.

If all the resident sit tight, then the Council will need to re-house them.
I wonder what's the reason for demolishing the Flats?

I’ve just realised, that is the tall block. Is it correct that it was people over 50 who were given a flat there. My sister lived there about 25 years ago , then later my best friend had a flat. Were some of the flats sold in later years. I always thought it was quite secure place for older people to live. Of course I’m speaking of memories more than 20 years ago.

Someone mentioned that the heating system in the Durham Court building was upgraded recently. If that's correct then what a waste of £thousands if the building is now getting demolished.

For the ex pats here is the building with the photo taken from the Orangemens Club.

South Tyneside Council must be the best in the world for demolishing essential housing, The School Street Flats, Westmorland Court spring to mind and now Durham Court,an absolute disgrace. Where are young people starting off in life expected to get accommodation ?

I could compile a list of buildings in our area that were built early 60s onwards & didnt last long before being demolished.
We had a Mountbatten Medical Centre adjacent to the Bentick & they demolished it to turn it into a grassy area.
Could these people actually run a proper business?

Back then High alumina cements were being used and they caused problems.

In 1975 I worked at the DHS tower block in Washington.

All the floor slabs had to be reinforced with steelwork to reduce the span of the floors.

Some had two steel beams inserted to cut the spans by a third.

I was there for 8 or 9 months.

Maybe a defect has shown up!
