An institution gone for good but like Woolworths it will live on. I recall the one at Hebburn Station and with great memories...

I wonder what will happen to the Post Office Counters that are in some of the branches, in Hereford there is quite a big Post Office counter, a,ways busy?

Post offices staying. The only place WH Smith make money are the railway station and airports, they're keeping those.

I don't think they are Sheila I could be wrong though, they've been dying on high streets for years, the shop was behind the times, newspapers are at their lowest point sales wise, it's cheaper getting your magazines on subscription, and places like Waterstones kill them bookwise. They tried to be jack of all trade but were master of none.

They never seemed to upgrade there shops, our WHS in Hereford is like stepping back into the 60’s but it does seem to have people in buying stuff, I do think that having the post office in situ does help.

A chain in Canada called Chapters replaced many of WH Smith stores., one could browse around these stores or sit in chairs or carpeted floors, coffee and snack bar. Kind of a Juppie type hang out store. No one hassels you to buy. Buy a book or just browse around. Always seem buisy with lineup at cash counters.

Nearest you get to that in WH Smith is your asked if you want to buy a reduced price bar of chocolate when you go to the till, staff always look totally disinterested or demotivated.

Used to buy my Eagle comic from the stationers in Hebburn Railway Station, funny but I was just thinking about it when I got on the Metro yesterday, wonder if anyone has a picture of it ?
