St Paul's ancient church, Jarrow

Local History enthusiast, Margaret McDonald was asking on a post below 'where was 'Don Rd' in Jarrow?'.
I couldnt find it in my records but Peter Cook found it on his old map & it is close to St Paul's church.Those buildings are probably on Don Rd.

Thank you Norman. Trying to discover how 2 brothers, who lived with their McArthur parents and siblings in Don Road in 1901 before being in Tyne Dock in 1911, went on to be educated in Oxford and Cambridge. In 1911 Reuben was described as being a pupil teacher. Want to know which schools they themselves attended as boys.

Hi Margaret,
I found a Mrs Ada McArthur, 'Tripe Dealer' at 14 Woodbine St, South Shields in 1914.

Tripe Dealer. How interesting is that. Great. Makes me wonder who had the rest of the animals. Must have been a joint enterprise

Tripe, haven't had that since I was knee high. It was probably a cheep product in its day for poor hungry mouths.

Dad used to eat tripe, he gave me a piece once, can still remember regretting asking for a taste!

Honeycomb with lots of vinegar ice cold! I still buy black pudding and when I'm in Durham market, pork dripping with jelly. What a liner for a Sunday lunchtime pint! Whatever happened to beef sausages? Tasteless rubbish pork now sad to say!...

I love my Full Scottish breakfast:

Lorne sausage (that's a square of sausage meat) haggis, of course, egg, tomato, beans and tomatoes...marvelous!

Typical Sunday breakfast as a teenager, Black Pudding, Bacon, Eggs, Fried Bread,Green Tomatoes all dripping with fat. Tripe was never that popular in the UK though several countries still serving it on a regular basis. UG

People used to say I'd pay it in later years eating fats like butter and dripping. My grandparents looked well on it and lived a long time!

Always remember Tripe and other traditional food being played out on plates at darts matches, I didn't care much for it but it was soon woofed Down by some.

My nieces hubby brought me a full lorne sausage(beef of course) and a full haggis from a village butcher about 5 miles from Glasgow. Made on the premises they were outstanding, used half froze the rest for later.
