You have to be kidding,no wonderI did not go further in UK schooling. Did end up with BA from a Canadian University though at age 40., not worth the paper it's printed on in real life skills.

You're not far wrong though! I just noticed that this is the exam for admission to Secondary School, so the children sitting this exam would be 10 or 11 years old!

I was doing some of the calculations in my head as I was reading..( I couldn't be bothered to reach for my calculator or a pen and paper).. I'm old enough to remember £sd and cwt...however the Metric system has its advantages.

for some of the questions you would have to have a figure in you head? for example to answer no 7 you would need to know that there
are 5280 inches in one mile, how many kids would have known that?

There are 5280 FEET in one mile (1,760yards x 3). There are in fact 63,360 inches in a mile!

Colin, like Davy, you failed your 11+......there are 63360 inches in a mile, therefore you will not be admitted to a Grammar School, No St Josephs or Jarrow Grammar for you, you'll be consigned to a Secondary School like St. James or Clegwell.

Holy Moly. How I ever got into JGS amazes me.
I hated maths.
So I went into a profession that needed maths skills and thrived. I was always good at doing everyday mental arithmatic and that was really all I needed.
At no stage in my career did I ever need to lay cigs end to end or arrive at "B" at the same time as my mate who used a bike!!
I confess that all these years on I was able to do the sums (it took me a long while) but I got bored by 7,8 & 9 !!

Well, I was told that I was a duffer at Maths, so our stream did "Commercial Maths" kind of simpler stuff......no Algebra, etc...etc

Hasn't stopped me though....

About 10 years later (whilst serving with the RAF) I had to do a specialist one-week course at Guildford Tech College, (a civilian establishment, obviously) concerning precision measurement, to do with calibration of precision measuring equipment.

When the Tutor said something like: "We now need to calculate the angle of a tapered bore, using Algebra, my heart sank, and I told him I was rubbish at Algebra.

So, he sat down with me, and step by step, went through a vary common sense, logical explanation, of how this particular problem was solved.

So, we made the calculation. AND I understood HOW I had arrived at the correct answer.....

So, had I got "brighter" over those 10 years?

I came to the conclusion: NO

I just had a Maths teacher that COULD'T teach!!!!

I learnt more about Maths in that week, than I did during 5 years at Secondary school!!!!!

Malcolm , it’s definitely how you are taught Maths. My neighbour was a Maths teacher in a local Comprehensive for 25 years. Her daughters both have good science degrees. One is an Actuary the other a Nuclear Engineer. She resigned after 25 years as she got fed up trying to teach students who were not interested. Then she worked from home as a private Maths tutor. She always had a waiting list of parents willing to pay for Maths tuition. I have to add quite a few were Chinese and Asian students already at fee paying schools.

Almost all Chinese and Asian parents living round us sent their children to tutors or had had tutors come to the house after school. (They knew the value of a good education)

John and Maria, very true,but I think it’s sad that a lot of young ones don’t use the privileges they have. I say this when seeing videos of young African children,walking for miles to attend school.
