The Ballast Hill was the perfect vantage point to see Swan Hunter launches.
Eight years after this launch I photographed Super Tanker 'Esso Northumbria' from the hill.

Another super photo from the past. Probably the larger ships could not be built on the Tyne today without some drastic renovations to the river width and depth. Thank you Norman

I didn’t realise that you photographed the Esso Northumbria launch photo which I have seen here. I’ve said it before but my Dad took me and my brother Gary see it. Nice to know you were there!

Here is one of many photos that I took of 'Esso Northumbria' being launched by Princess Anne in May 1969. It was classed as a Super Tanker & the largest ship ever built in the UK.
