Whinney Lane

I'm interested to know if anyone has more information or memories of Whinney Lane, which I have seen marked on old photographs and maps. In this photograph it looks like it ran down towards the Tyne from near Hartleyburn Avenue, so would it have disappeared when the Clothier Lab was built? Today I expect it would be somewhere in the new estate that is built there. Has it been memorialized in a street name?

We used it to get to the Tyne (our playground) and there was a small cottage half way down. All that remains is the bus stop is still called whinney lane

Interesting! I grew up on Lambley Crescent and never knew that about the bus stop!

That’s the only way I know the name. At the top of Hartleyburn Avenue , the bus stop was called Whinney Lane.

Think some of it is still there along from the allotments.

I'm sure a Whitney is a horse so I assume horses were kept there...
