St.Pauls research
Posted by Stan Wears on 18/5/2025, 10:25 am
As many of you know, Jimmy Guy (the Verger) of St. Pauls Jarrow and I have been doing in depth research on the church for around 5/6 yrs now but sadly, Jimmy is in poor health and also Margaret his wife. Sadly, Jimmy has had to stop all future research with myself. It was suggested on this board that I share our research so next time I'm in Jarrow I shall donate the file to St.Pauls church for public use. and not archives. In that file there is evidence of 3 crypts 29ft below the church, 3 burials 6" below the altar and every stone that was used to build the church has been dated and where it was quarried. Meanwhile I'm sure you'll all wish Jimmy and Margaret well as I carry on elsewhere in the country.

Sorry folks. I have gotten mixed up with another church so the depth of the church should read 2.4 M where the 3 crypts are... Also I have decided to make a DVD about our research as well as handing in the file...
More than likely Colin but I'm sure the Crypts were built at ground level then built over a lot later. There are remains of a village suspected medieval or earlier further up Church bank which supports my theory. Hopes this helps Colin
