Plus and Minus

What we take away with us
How much we leave behind
Is a matter for conjecture
A conundrum for the mind

Our wealth is not transportable
All must remain on earth
But treasure is no yardstick
For what a life was worth

When the eulogies are fulsome
And the praise is undiluted
Perhaps self interest plays a part
When achievements are saluted

Memories that warm the heart
Or raise a rueful smile
Have no place on a balance sheet
But will linger yet awhile

The sum of all our influence
Plus the love we freely gave
Is balanced by the sense of loss
That lives on beyond the grave
