RMS Mauretania Launch from Wallsend in 1906

'Swan Hunter-Whigham Richardson' at Wallsend built the 'Mauretania', the largest and fastest Ocean Liner in the World when she entered service in 1907. She held the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossings until 1929.
In May 1920 some of my Scottish Dunn family emigrated to the USA from Southampton on the Mauretania.

Ex Shipyard lads would be the best ones to answer your comment.
Personally I dont think the Tyne will ever build ships again because the men who built them will be Pensioners now and all their skills lost.

Alas Norman I think you are right, it is such a pity part of the local heritage has gone forever.

Only place you could build a ship on the Tyne these days would be the dock at A&P, Hebburn yard.
