Shields Walkabout
Posted by Mac C on 8/7/2025, 10:41 am
There are some good photos by David Barber on the facebook site "South Shields Photos old and new". On Trow rocks he records names like Graham Sands, Camel Island, Lots Wife (the inspiration obvious) which I had never heard spoken and Boatie's Bay which I think I do. I certainly remember the place. I was also interested to hear of the path alongside the Westoe Pub. Salters Trod! So named after fishing and the Norwegian influence in our area. Anyone else heard these?

The names are just local to Shields people, but I have heard of 'Camel Island' but none of the others Mac. Shields people probably havent heard of 'Spuggies Bridge' or 'Whinny Lane' or 'Lukes Lane'
Probably Norman but my Dad was born a Sand-dancer and many of my relatives with whom I played on Trow Rocks were from S Shields and I never heard those names! Now with some time I have found most of the named places on Google Maps. So just me being a bit dim!!
Re Spuggies Bridge. You and I know where it was but there are those, especially younger than us, from Hebburn who have disputed its location. I take your point about Whinney Lane!! I bet lots of Hebburn locals dont know where it was!
