Hebburn Newtown Flats in the 1970s

Durham Court Multi-Storey Flats are supposedly going to be demolished in the next few years, after the Council get the residents settled in alternative housing.
If that happens, does it mean similar Flats dotted around the country will have to be demolished under the same rule ie they are just over 50 yrs old & passed their expected life.
This photo shows three other Flats that were demolished and I cant remember why?
I remember people saying they were lovely places to live.

I remember all of those and the Argyle Street flats. The Argyle Street flats lasted 15 to 20 years. Durham Court is the only block out of all of them that has lasted for 50 years. Cumberland, Westmorland and Northumberland Courts all lasted between around 20 and 40 years. I've no idea why any of them were demolished, but they certainly didn't last very long.

I went out with a girl who lived with her family in Cumberland Court and I remember them being nice flats.

I know they had a bit of trouble with cockroaches / bugs but that is true of many big buildings like that.

You have to wonder where all the people who lived in those blocks were moved to.

When Hadrian wanted to build a wall across the north of England' his personal ' soothsayer' who could predict the future said 'build it on the north side of the river cos the idiots on the south side will knock it down before it gets to 100 years old '.

I lived as a young boy in shamrock Street..adjacent to St Rolox Street which I believe still stands today..I honestly don't know why shamrock Street was demolished to make way for one of the new block of flats or which name it was given..possibly Westmooreland..anyway at 8 years old virtually the whole street on mass moved up to a new estate which is now lukes lane..we all moved into one street ..Colwyn Parade where I still live now..same house which was just a plot of land at the time which became our 3 bedroom modern home..I was then the young boy but now the older adult and quiet a few of my piers have now passed..its amazing how quickly time passes..

Amazing differences in backgrounds, Jed. To still be in the same place, after all of those years..

NOT a criticism, just different...

I've just done a count up....about 20 different address's, over 70 years....

Mam always said I was a bit of a gypsy!!!

Anyway, as they say...so far, so good......

Or maybe I'm just staying one step ahead of the police/creditors/hit-men!! LOL
