My Playground in the 1950s was Bede's Well area, the Slagheap & 'The Dip' which was the little valley between Windermere Cres & Cambridge Ave.The Burn came down from the lakes area & went under the 'new road'(Campbell Pk Rd) via big concrete Pipes big enough to crawl through. I know that because my mates and I did that many times. The burn then continued on through the lovely little valley to the Slag Heap just yards from the Well where it went under the heap & emerged at Pig Sty Ave allotments. (Sadly the little valley was later filled in by the Council) Bede's Well in the 50s was like the photo below BUT only half the white coping stone was visible then as it had all sunk down over. The little stream (Burn) ran alongside it and kept it a wet area. As a young teen I've actually stood inside those railings as have my mates & there was certainly no deep well there. I suppose it's possible it had filled up with mud over the years but surely a proper test should be carried out to see if there really was a Well there or was it just a small pond fed by that same stream?. I've always wondered ‘why would Monks would walk a mile or more multiple times each day to get buckets of water from a Well when that little fresh water Stream flowed passed their Monastery?
