The Quayside before the famous 'Tyne Bridge' was built

A postcard photo taken from the High Level Bridge, not long before Newcastle had another bridge we simply call 'The Tyne Bridge'.

Nice photo Norman, lots of what look like tug boats, so much going on.

What looks like tug boats are in fact wherries and were used a lot in moving goods up and down the river.

I always thought wherries had a sail?
We used one on the Norfolk Broads msny years ago

Yes, some had sails. some also had oars and some used poles

Over to the right on the Gateshead side is the area where there was the great fire in the 1854 that hit Newcastle as well.

I think there is a wall plaque about it on the bottom road under the the Tyne Bridge.

So those buildings area after 1854.

I see three cranes and one is steam powered.

I’ve not seen any photos of those type of cranes that I can remember.

There must be some maybe in an old catalogue.

I remember a small old crane in Hebburn Palmers yard in the stockyard area.
