BOYS FROM CLEGWELL also went with other schools as follows: 02 New Town 12 Quay 07 St Oswalds 00 Colliery 04 Clegwell girls TOTAL : 25 i.e. + : 67 from above GRAND TOTAL : 92 boys
It was known of 17 boys who were to be ‘self educated’ but could have been more. Clegwell party was billeted as follows:
A. Stainton (near Barnard Castle) Mr. JENKINS + 9 children B. Toft Hill (near Bishop Auckland) Mr. LAWSON Mr. CRAIG + 18 children C. Woodland (north of Barnard Castle Mr. GASCOIGNE & west of Bishop Auckland) Mr. LEES Mrs BRAMWELL + 25 children D. Ingleton (west of Darlington) Mr. LAMB Mrs.LAMB Mrs. PATTERSON +28 children E. Bolam (north west of Darlington) Mr. BURTON Mrs.LAINE + 15 children F. Gainford (half way between Mr. DOBIE Barnard Castle & Darlington) Mrs.DOBIE + 22 children
Between 15th & 19th September: “ Evacuation Bulletin No. 1” was published today. This bulletin, giving news of the school & the evacuees in their scattered groups, has been issued to all parents & also to each evacuated group. It is hoped thus to keep the party in touch with each other.”
19th September: “Some 7 boys have been brought home by foolish parents ....” 29th September: The school “Evacuation Bulletin No.2” was issued today 18th October: The school “Evacuation Bulletin No.3 was issued today. “This third number concerned itself principally with stopping any tendency to drift home again.”
