St. John's Terrace

St. John's Terrace, Jarrow in circa 1955 with St. Bede's church at the bottom of the road. All the houses on the right were demolished to make way for the flyover.

One of those houses on the left was a clinic. I think the one with the car outside I remember having Xrays there in the 40's.

I checked my 1936 records for St John Tce & found the following for Mac Cummings incase they were still there years later.

At 'Craigie Lea' property was JH Laydon's (Surgeon)

At no5 was J Skinner (Surgeon)

At No 11 were M Irvin,Mrs Hendry & McPherson (surgeons)

Hi Patrick.
When I saw the name of a surgeon called Laydon I thought 'wonder if that's Patrick Brennan's relation.

Dr Hubert Laydon - yes, my relation. I am only alive because he went on holiday after diagnosing my stomach upset as gastritis. I was four years old. The locum who filled in for him diagnosed a ruptured appendix and rushed me to the RVI.

I'm sure the 47 double decker bus went under Albert Rd bridge and doubled back up St.John's Terrace.

Yes Mac, it was known as the Chest Clinic, and as you say it was beside the car (Sunbeam Talbot?). The house between it and St Bede’s church was Springwell or Springfield House. It had some link with the church - I recall assembling in there for a procession or some other event.

An Armstrong Siddeley I think.

Back to the Chest Clinic I remember the Xray process included two sticking plaster "crosses" on my shoulder blades.

I am going with the sunbeam because the Armstrong - I think was much larger with smoother rear arches

St. Bede's Church was built by Mc Glynshey and Lumsden. (1860). Lumsden went solo after that to build St. Aloysius Church in Hebburn in 1888. Most of the Labour at St. Bede's was voluntary.
