We've all heard of Hedley Schools on Argyle St which are still there today just yards from St Cuthbert's Church.

I never realised that the Rev Hedley was just 36 yrs of age when he died.

. He was also remebered when a street was named Hedley St.

1871 March 19th The
foundation stone of St. Cuthberts Church Hebburn was laid this day amidst
rejoicing of goodwill.
1879 November.l9th A new
organ was opened today at St. Cuthberts Church Hebburn and has been built by
Messrs Harrison's of Durham at a cost of £250
1881 April 8th This day the
Prime Minister appointed the Rev. P.W. Clarke late curate of Hexham to the
newly formed parish of St. Oswald. The new parish comprises the whole of
Hebburn Colliery and with a population of 3,000 and is at present endowed with
£200 per annum. The patronage is vested in the Crown and Bishop of Durham
alternately.
1881 November 18th The
foundation stone of St. Cuthberts Schools was laid this day by the Bishop of
Durham Dr. Lightfoot at Hebburn in the presence of a large assembly of
spectators.
1882 September 29th died at
the vicarage-aged 36 years the Rev. William Hedley Vicar of Hebburn. The
Deceased clergyman was highly esteemed by his parishioners. "In the midst
of life we are in death" He took charge of the parish in the year 1875.

Stan is compiling the history of two churches, St Oswalds and St Cuthberts.

I'm trying but for some reason there's very very little. However, I'll keep digging then make that dvd. I may contact a stone mason because the walls are single course propped up by 20 buttresses. So odd because it cost more than a conventional build of double course....Thanks again Norman...

In Hebburn, St Andrews had a school for Boys & Girls & St Cuthbert's used Hedley Hall for their school.The other churches probably had them aswell.

This is what I googled Malcolm.
Yes, churches had their own schools in the 1800s
, and they were a major provider of education before the government became the main source. These schools, which included both charity and later state-integrated institutions, focused on religious instruction as well as basic literacy and numeracy. Notable examples include the Church of England's National Society and the Catholic Poor School Committee.

I don't think the churches had day Schools. They would be Sunday Schools. I went to Sunday School at Central Methodist on Argyle Street.

And so did I Margaret.I knew it as ' The Primitive Methodist' Parading with all the other denominations. to Tenants Field for fun and games , buns ,cakes drinks. I remember one year, probably the first time for me,.What with all the excitement getting totally disenorentated I tagged in with the first friendly lot that came by me.It so happened that it was The Salvation Army I soon became one of their flock . To a wee lad their buns etc became the only reason to be there .OH then ,The innocence of Youth , I noticed that the speed at which their offerings were being devoured I had better get in dubble quick, so, I didn't let my side down. Life is a long learning curve.
