Cape Colonna

Postcard photo dated (posted) 4th October 1912 showing Cape Colonna ashore. On the 12th September 1912 while on a voyage from Smyrna (which became Izmir in 1930) to Leith she called at the Tyne to take on coal. Unfortunately she struck the Black Middens Rocks at the entrance to the River Tyne. Later pulled off by the tugs Talisman, Hercules and Cruiser, she was beached between the Groyne and South pier. On the 30th December 1912 she was refloated and on examination was found to be so badly damaged that she was later sold to shipbreakers at South Shields. She was built in 1889 by the Tyne Iron SB Co., Willington Quay.
