A bit more of our History

I was born in 1944 and lived diagonally across Lyon St from the 'Theatre Royal'. When I was maybe 5 I used to go to the matinee's on Saturdays at the Theatre with my pals. Then on Friday night October 6th 1950 when I was 6 and in bed looking forward to the next day to see the next episode of some exciting series, Dad stuck his head in the room & told me the Theatre is on fire. I was allowed to go downstairs and stand at the front door to watching the Firemen fighting the fire.Because I was so young, I have no memory of inside or outside the theatre and have looked everywhere for a photo unsuccessfully. The newspaper cutting in this article is all thats available. Click the LINK and read a bit about the Theatre & also the Gem.I often think 'Did Laurel & Hardy ever visit when Stan Laurel's dad Arthur Jefferson ran the Theatre???? surely they did when they visited our area?
