Gateshead High St looking north early 1900s

A nice view looking towards where the Tyne Bridge would eventually be built in the 1920s & which opened for road traffic in 1928.

It looked so smart in those days, as previously discussed it is now a complete tip, so sad.

What a wonderful picture of what used to be. Some buildings look as classical as those in Newecastle. I agree Liz, the place is a wasteland now. Another short sighted mistake by the authorities.

Does anyone remember seeing a life size wooden figure of a Scottish Highlander standing outside the tobacconist on the right hand side of this part of the High Street. I last saw the kilted model in the late 1940s - early 1950s. He was quite a colourful character.

No but I remember a sign over the bridge, Aichinsons Ales..
