What I found on the 1921 Census

First experience of 1921 census after treating myself to an extension of Find My Past. Who to look for first? I chose an uncle of mine, Hebburn born, who went on to be a Chief Engineer on the Russian Convoy in WW2. James Albert BUTCHER, born 1901, middle of five sons of William Noble BUTCHER and Hannah Irving SAWYERS. I sort of didn’t expect to find him as he could have been away at sea. What I did find I think is interesting and may be interesting to you time-served chaps out there. I found him living with four other male apprentices at the address ‘Sea Banks, Berwick upon Tweed’ They were all employed by ‘R & W Hawthorn Leslie Shipbuilders and Ship Repairers’. He, together with a William Stephenson born 1902, were apprentice Ships Fitters. George FAWCUS born 1901 (and who completed the form) was app. Ships Caulker. James Hannah was born 1901 and was an app. Electrician and John Thomas FARROW, born 1902 was an app. Ship Plater. One of ‘Albert’s’ younger brothers later went on to marry a younger sister of John FARROW. Looking at pages further on in the census, it seems as if Palmers sent young men there also. Perhaps it was for experience in a different ship yard.
