An old photo dating from 1890 showing the old sweet shop in Shadwell Street, South Shields. Shadwell Street ran alongside the riverside.

That is real poverty. Not the pseudo poverty of today!
The shop looked closed for business even in 1890!

That photo shows how LUCKY us later generations are.
As Mac implies, some people today talk about being in Poverty but they still have TV's, Mobile Phones. Tattoos, and smoke & drink.
When I found out the average price for 20 cigarettes today was £16 I was really shocked.

I have to agree. Yet we are still told there are children living in poverty. I would question what the parent or parents spend their benefits on. Schools have to provide a breakfast and a lunch. Often clean clothes.

Have to agree with all of you. This talk of "child poverty", how do they quantify that? Against what measure?

I've seen mothers on TV, Tattoos (not cheap) I-phones (not cheap) make-up & botox (not cheap) pleading that they can't afford their heating/rent blah...blah... makes me feel sick...
