These people enjoying life in the sunshine on the beach at Shields were soon going to experience the bombings in WW2 .

Looks like there all having a day out at the North Pole, was scanning for polar bears.

I remember Billy Connolly once saying that every person in Scotland has a photo of themselves as a child on the beach wearing an overcoat and wellies! Tyneside is just the same!

In those days our 'fresh air' was polluted with smoke and fumes because every house had a coalfire. Ontop of that the Chemical, Copper,Iron & Lead Works were all churning out more pollution. Doctors recommended people to go to the seaside and 'Take in the fresh sea air' for health purposes. Thats probably why they are all wrapped up Joseph.

Ye but not fully clothed on a hot sunny day,couldn't think of a more unhealthy thing to do.
