The carpark you can see on the photo was next to the Excel Bowling Alley which had the DSS (Dept of Social Security')above then top floor was 'Club Franchi' nightclub.

I used to work at Westoe Colliery, when on night shift every Friday morning a few of us used to go to the Bowling Alley for Breakfast and a few games of Bowls.

Norman. You forgot to mention a rare survivor of the change to the general area by the Viking and Later re-developments.
I refer of course to the Crown and Anchor on Chapel Rd. Still going strong apparently. Do we have any regulars on the board?
Over the years licenced premises have been much harder to kill off and knock down than other historic buildings until of course TTK and his cronies came along and found the recipe for shutting thousands every year leaving the building to rot or serve some imaginary "social anchor".

If you stare at this photo for 10 mins you will see Mac come out of the 'Crown and Anchor' pub built in the latter part of the 1800s.
It is on sale with Right Move for £155,000
