Trolleybus

An old photo showing a trolleybus on Dean Road in August 1961. Trolleybuses lasted until 1964 with the last one running on 29th April 1964. Photographer A.D. Packer.

An interesting photo not just for the Trolley Bus but it also shows the Co-op store which although in South Shields was owned and operated by The Jarrow and Hebburn Co-operative Society.

And where are all our Co-op stores now? I still have my membership but no where to benefit from it. Remember all the stores in Hebburn alone? And I won't mention how we all remember individual 'store numbers'. My mother took me to Jarrow to start my own account when I was 17. 70 years ago.

There are over 2400 of them in the UK Margaret. Of those 2000 are Convenience stores which is the fastest growing sector in the UK. The Co-op through its various manifestations is one of the largest.
Aren't there any on South Tyneside? Bear in mind that the Co-op also operates under the Nisa brand in certain locations.
There a several Co-op Convenience Stores close by me in South Derbyshire. They invariably have a P.O. and other services like "parcel lockers"
I'm afraid your Coop Membership Number from J & H Days is long gone......like you I remember my Mums and my Granny's to this day.
Some of the Co-ops still operate schemes but not all!

I have a memory of my Dad, Harry Jackson taking me to see trolley buses. It seemed to be a big thing so perhaps related to their demise. Something special to witness. I would’ve turned 5 in 1964

We left Hebburn in 1964, when I was 8, and recall seeing them prior to that.

So I might have been about 5-8 years old.
