I think I read something years ago saying those strange looking cranes were made in Germany and were installed in Jarrow Palmers in 1905.

The famous elliptical gantry and cableway cranes at Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company in Jarrow were built in the USA. They were manufactured and installed by the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Company of New York, a prominent builder of hoisting and cableway systems.
