Robin of Nottingham

Robbed of his inheritance
Of justice there was none
Became a rebel leader
Into exile he was gone
No stately home,or silken bed
Only in a woodland bower
Fair Marian to wed
North of London,south from Leeds
Oak woods still echo Robin’s deeds
Tyrant’s enemy,people’s friend
Throughout the world,fame without end
In castles pent behind stone walls
Normans trembled at hunting calls
Greenwood men don’t bow the knee
Heroes all in the forest free
An icon bold,daring and witty
Most famous son of this fair city

Roughly speaking, I have spent a third of my life
In Jarrow Two years national service,mostly in Egypt
then another third in Kent mostly working in
Power station construction.Finally I have spent
Thirty odd years in Nottingham to be close
To my daughter and granddaughters
This poem appeared in the local press
In 2020

For Audrey
I have avoided influencing my two granddaughters
regarding their futures,The eldest who works
In the NHS has joined a writing group.and
written a short play.The youngest who graduates
this year has joined a drama group and will
work for a publishing group if all goes well
