The true facts about the Coke Works
Posted by Norman on 20/7/2026, 10:15 am
This photo taken inside the Coke Works (Built because of what the Jarrow Marchers did) shows Hexham Ave just yards from them. The Works were built 'out in the countryside'in the 1930s because producing coke from coal was a known 'dirty job'. Then in the 1950s Hebburn Council decided to build housing next to them. Surely that was wrong? A local Councillor Jenny Shearan moved into one of those Council Houses and she soon helped with a campaign to close the Works down because of the dust and smells. The campaign was successful and the Works were closed down. That councillor is now classed as a Hebburn Hero for doing what she did & there is even a book out to tell us this and a large Frieze on the wall of a building in the shopping centre with a photo of her. I thought the true facts should be told because people lost their jobs when the works were closed.
Things don’t make sense lately Norman, sad to say. Incidentally, my dad Harry worked there as a Gateman I think in the very early eighties. He had to get his ears syringed regularly because of the dust
