Looking for memories of Joe Carroll

Hi all,

I'm Joe Carroll's grandson. Some of you may have seen Norman's piece about my Grandad's wartime RAF service earlier this year. And I've loved reading the memories several of you have already shared on here.

If any of you were taught by Joe, or have memories passed down from someone who was, I'd love to hear them, however small.

I remember Joe Carroll well as he hit me in the eye with a snowball when we were in the prefabs across from the main school.

He was a great science teacher too. If the class got a bit noisy, he would say " Shut up. You're like a lot of little babies"! I went back to see him when I was about 17 and he laughed as we shared a few memories of the class. At lunchtime, he would stand with one leg on a chair, looking out of the window. I often wondered did he get bored? Anyway Rory, he was a great teacher!

Many of Mr Carroll's pupils from the 1950s may sadly have passed on but these children on my late 1960s photo might have memories of him teaching them?
None of those children would have known what their Teacher did in WW2. What a man!

That’s a lovely photo, Norman. I knew he specialised in maths, and his quick mental arithmetic was handy in calculating navigation in the Mosquito. Didn’t realise he taught science as well.

Real understanding teacher definitely my favourite,,Annie macdonald good but strict, second favourite was the Pip, Pip develin, lovely man lessons were something to look forward to.

I remember at lunch times (noon until 1-15pm) teachers Mr Carroll Mr O-Hagan and Mr Brennan at the prefabs window, having a laugh at lads who instead of getting the cane were having to hop on their hunkers up and down the lawn.
It kept us fit haha
