His surname was Needham. He still has a lot of family in the calf close area.

Amazing to think that it will be 90 years ago this October.

I remember Look North doing a feature on the 40th anniversary of the march when I was young. They had a theme song for that section that went "Gannin' doon, Geordie, gannin' doon to the toon where the power lies..." It has stayed with me all these years.

Also the Lindisfarne song "Marshall Riley's Army" which I believe was written for a BBC Radio 4 programme about the march.

My great uncle Martin Joyce was one of the Jarrow Marchers so proud of him and his fellow walkers

Marshall Rileys Army was recorded for the album Back and Fourth which was released in June 1978. The album recording took place from February through to April that year. It has since been used on a fairly regular basis for features and documentaries of the Jarrow March. But was not written for any specific documentary.
