Hi Audrey,
The 'Ropery Estate' is a new housing development on the site that was once had a Rope Making Factory there. The houses are for buyers and are not Council Houses.

Ah, thank you Norman. I thought they were perhaps large buildings that were going to be used for factories of some kind. I'll look back at the photographs. Maybe a new shopping mall will be built to service the area too?

My Mum worked at the ropery from age 14. She then became a supervisor. She went across the Tyne on the ferry each day.

Hi Elizabeth,
If your mam went across the Tyne to work, then she must have worked at 'Hood-Haggies Rope Works'at Willington Quay.
In Hebburn we had the 'Hebburn Rope & Sail Works Co Ltd' that operated from 1900 to 1948.
That new Housing Estate Ian photographed is being built on their land in Hebburn hence the name 'The Ropery'.

NOW I get it! I've heard (and sung, badly) this song, but never understood what Stottin doon the "Ropes Works wall" meant.

Makes complete sense, now!
