Another old cabinet photo. Photographer was Downey & Sons, Eldon Street, South Shields. Photo dates from circa 1890.

As usual another beautiful old photo of a local lass probably born 1860s or 70s that is long departed from this earth.
Circa means ' about or around' Joseph

When did the first photographer say 'cheese'?

The subjects of these cabinet photos are always so serious.

They could have been quite nervous I would imagine that there was lots of equipment around in those days that perhaps had not been seen before?

It wasn't the case of just pressing the shutter in those days to take a photo. The subject had to keep still for minutes and it isn't easy to hold a smile for such a long time which is why you don't see anyone smile in old photos.

I was looking at some recent photos and wondering if the cheesy smiles would really look ridiculous to the people who had serious faces on their photos. I have seen early photos with people smiling but not many

I wonder what people in the future will think of the "duck lips" that everyone was doing in their selfies a while back! 🤣
