St Bede's ancient church & Monastery

Probably the oldest buildings in our Tyneside area apart from the Roman remains. at Shields & Wallsend.
A great photo Norman! and a very fine history. When Jimmy Guy the verger and I did our study on the church over the 10 years, we found that some early foundation stones came from a roman look out up the bank near the old hall. However, the later church was a mixture of old quarries was as far away as Sunderland. We are convinced that the monastic buildings were linked under earlier foundations. That also told us about the 3 unknown catacombs under the present floor according to GPR ( Ground Penetrating Radar) results. Having done a detailed survey of floor levels and dimension checks, another fact arose that 3 people are buried 9" under the present altar. There is no trace of who or what they were. If you look at the bell tower, it is in fact not keyed into the rest of the church. It is free standing! I could go on all day with telling you all about the research we did which lots of it is still full of mysteries.
