This is a fantastic photo. I had no idea that Simpson's Hostel was so big either. I only ever saw the front of it.

Great that you can also see the Schools Street Flats and also Greenfields Special School

The White Lead or its proper name The Royal Hotel. It wasn't Dougie's until 1992.

The 'White Lead' was a nickname because of all the white dust landing on the Hotel from the Lead Works across the road.
As Peter said the Hotel's real name was the 'Royal Hotel'.
When they changed its name to 'Dougies Tavern' I thought 'what an inappropriate name that is' because we dont have Taverns in the North of England. Today its back to being called 'The White Lead' which is much better.

Excellent photo. Thats how I remember the area as a child. I wonder if the railway sidings were still getting used to Leslies and Palmers then.

I think, if memory serves me correct, that it was early 70's when those lines stopped being used. I seem to recall when Palmers closed in 1970 that was the end of the lines with all steel being brought in by road. Leslies closed in 1981 and the lines hadn't been used a for a long time before that.

I was in St. Aloysius Infants from 1978 to 1981, and I do remember the railway crossing on Argyle Street still being used in around 1979. I have no idea for which shipyard though, so I was wondering if the shipyards had any use for them in 1982. The sidings may have been getting used at times up to the early 80s, maybe for other rail freight traffic though. I know that the remnants of the sidings were still there in 1984/85 as I used to walk over them to go to a friends flat in Wilson Court flats

Glad you explained the Black Coal Dust Norman at ‘A’. I was a bit confused by it.
I’m having trouble placing the shops I used to be sent to by my mother, (F?)
It used to be easy, crossing the railway line right by our house until they built a wall and I had to go up to the main road Argyle St towards the grey flats and left again.
There was a Chinese Takeaway there.
I went to a disco once or twice in a community centre there too. My mother who was a seamstress made me a beautiful new top, pink satin with sequins she sewed on.It was 1972/3 and I felt a bit scared of the skinheads hanging round the toilets. The Hairys were doing the head shaking thing to the music 😁

I used to visit my grandparents in 82 atlee court flats and the lines across argyle street were in use then. I seem to remember when i was in palmers in 84 a shunter coming in with steel for the conveyor but might be wrong.
