Weekend Header at Saltwell Park in Gateshead

Posted by Norman Dunn on 30/10/2026, 1:21 pm

I wonder if there are any board visitors that have never been to the beautiful Saltwell Park in Gateshead???
It was a lovely park to visit and there was always lots to see.
It's a shame Hebburn Council hadnt tried to copy it using one of the 4 lakes we once had.😞😞

Another lovely photo of Saltwell Park, I guess quite a few of us have memories of visits to the Park.

I agree Norman and it could have been developed. Jos Gardener used to swim in the first lake and Elliot Lillwall paddled his canoe in it! We used to catch minnows and sticklebacks in it with a 6d fishing net from Bib Hudsons. Pity we lost the lot!

If there had been anyone on Hebburn Council at the time with half a brain one of them lakes could've been kept, what an asset that would have been to the area, but asking for common sense from the council I suppose is asking to much.

Re
Hebburn lakes. I understood that they were originally tailing ponds servicing Monkton coke ovens!! Is there any truth in this?

It still is a lovely park but it also generates money to help offset some of its costs with cafe, boat hire, the admission for the fireworks display which attracts thousands of people, sadly there was nothing along those lines at Hebburn.

Those things could have easily been arranged Brian.
The lake nearest the Park swings and banana slide was previously a boating lake so could have been a boating lake again.

Saltwell Park has all the merits said here except for the lake activity. Unfortunately, all public boat hire ended quite a few years ago due to council budget cuts, maintenance costs, health-and-safety factors plus insurance considerations. Model boating continues. However, the park remains a truly wonderful place to visit.

This is from the Saltwell Park website:
Boating lake
The lake is a refuge for wildlife. In the summer, the lake comes alive with pedalos, rowing boats and inflatables available to hire. The park also has its own model boat club which meets every Saturday and Sunday mornings as well as Wednesday from noon in the summer.
