has contributed much to our standard of living, with cleaner air, water, and more fertile soil…. but too much of a good thing is still not good. Too much obesity, too much waste (garbage and plastic bags being shipped to garbage dumps in Indonesia… giving back?!), too much violence and crime, fighting over the excesses as well as the shortages…. too many drugs, etc. Nature seeks a balance, and it can be a painful lesson to learn. Climate change is teaching that lesson as we speak, even though some still don’t learn.
A few years ago, I wanted to build my garden soil back up after much of it had eroded away from too much rain water running through it. So I had some dirt hauled in and built a berm on two sides to channel excess rain water around the garden instead of through it. So I engineered it just so and planted grass seed on the berms, and it worked great! Then I had more dirt hauled in to fill in the garden. It was supposed to be organic garden soil, with the right mix of sand, compost, etc. So they dumped two big loads, and we began to spread it out. Well… this wonderful soil that we paid extra for was loaded with millions of tiny pieces of plastic that had been pulverized into it… from plastic bags, bottles, and who knows what all. And to this day, I’m still picking those pieces out of my garden.
