In our town, more than half of all police calls are concerning homeless issues.
Three major reasons for homelessness categorize the individuals.
The first, but not the largest, are those just down on their luck, deserving help to get work.
Second are people who need to be institutionalized because of mental health problems.
The third and largest group are druggies and alcoholics. Community efforts to house and help them have been rejected mostly because they won’t agree to any conditions re their accountability for rules of any kind.
It’s not wise to be less than very careful trying to help.
Some of our homeless are dangerous. Homeowners are experiencing vandalism, burglary, pet abuse, et al. Kids aren’t safe in some areas.
As LA readies itself for the Olympics, homeless are gradually being pushed out and the numbers are growing in outlying communities. I expect things to reach a boiling point in the next year or so. Not all of SoCal cities are sanctuary cities and may actually address the problem efficiently.
