He was a World War II Army volunteer with no love of having been to war and never talked about his experience, like most veterans.
Early 1960s, most believed in their government and thought we were the good guys. The anti-war movement did not exist yet.
Quite a different country back then, Cold War and knowing to countries fought proxy wars like Korea and Vietnam. The 1965 draft was the first draft of that war.
When I got back, the Veteran organizations, full of WWII vets told us that neither the Korean
War, nor the Vietnam War, were real wars, and they did not want us to get the VA benefits.
People make a big deal about the lack of respect of the later anti-war demonstrators.
Yet, before that existed, we got no respect from the World War II veterans that controlled the /veteran organizations.
That is the reason that I have never joined any Veteran Organization, nor cared that most of them have collapsed. Meanwhile the Vietnam Era vets out number the vets who actually fought the War.
