I want us all to help the poor, but there is disagreement on the best way to do it.
In 2018, a nonprofit gave every adult in the Ahenyo village $500 in Western Kenya. Most families had lived in extreme poverty for generations, and this sum was roughly equivalent to their annual salaries.
Where traditional aid programs assume that philanthropists have the best knowledge of a community's needs, cash giving programs believe the people experiencing poverty best understand what they need to escape it.
