"Religion is not a scientific or mathematical proposition. It can not be proved or falsified. Religion (based on the Latin word meaning to "tie back") is based on tradition, on practices (primarily) and beliefs (secondarily) that help bind people together and create social cohesion that gives people comfort and strength within the group. Unfortunately, it also enhances separation between people of different groups, but that is a different question.
So the truth or falsity of religion is not what it is about. Its purpose is to join people and give them solace. Some people do not need, or believe that they do not need, this solace. Others would accept solace only if they were convinced it is based on truth. To the extent that they seek truth, they can be strong spiritual leaders. But most people do not have the time or inclination or ability. So they accept what they have learned, what others have told them. Or, they reject it."
